Mass Communication + Multipotentialites: A Perfect Match!
Has your mother ever nagged you about being a jack of all trades, but a master of none? Have you ever struggled to complete a task because you were distracted by many other interesting things happening around you? If these scenarios ring a bell, you’re most likely a multipotentialite!
What’s a multipotentialite, you may ask? Break down the word and you will see that it simply means someone with plenty of potential! A multipotentialite does not specialise in just one area but has the intellectual ability to excel in a few different fields. Famous multipotentialites include Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Sir Isaac Newton and Aristotle, to name a few. Da Vinci is known to have constantly blamed himself for not completing the tasks he set out to do, yet the world sees him as an inspiration with his ideas in science, maths, engineering and the human anatomy. Multipotentialites have this incredible ability to creatively bring together disparate ideas and make them work harmoniously and beautifully. So, being called a multipotentialite is a great thing – be proud to be acknowledged as someone with plenty of potential!
So, what makes a multipotentialite? Here are the two traits we found in multipotentialites:
- You say “I AM BORED” far too often! As it is, our time on earth is too short and there is so much we don’t know. So there’s this inherent need to know more. Multipotentialites thrive on exploring, learning and mastering new skills and with the internet, knowledge is now easily attainable.
- You are often misunderstood by many! You may have been called “Flaky” and “Random” or have been asked this question: “Are you sure you can do this? You’ve never done it before!” The truth is multipotentialites are meant to do just that: Something they’ve never done before! Challenges and the unknown pique your interest because you’re wired to explore new worlds.
So, what’s a good career for a multipotentialite? Ask a multipotentialite what they want as a career and chances are, you won’t get a straight answer. The problem is not because they don’t know what to do but rather, they don’t see why they need to specialise in something. Having interdisciplinary knowledge is something attractive to multipotentialites and one of the fields to offer that is Mass Communication. In Mass Communication, you get to learn about human behaviour, the art of crafting messages and engineering the many mediums of communication, both traditional and digital.
As someone who has just completed the SPM, you would naturally have concerns about the next phase of your life. Instead of seeing limitations or hurdles, you will see possibilities and a variety of options as a multipotentialite. Instead of being afraid or feeling a sense of uncertainty, embrace the multiplicity of your interests and goals. Society’s definition of success is no longer limited to just one and there are many ways to be a success!
